Monday, June 26: muy muy caliente!

This Monday’s program also offers many interesting highlights.
For connoisseurs, the first appointment not to be missed is at 7:30 p.m. at Stage Chiesa. JazzAscona regular Danilo Moccia will lead an international sextet together with two fellow trombonists: Chris Butcher from New Orleans and Japan’s Yuu Uesugi. The band moves between swing and jazz standards.
Then at 8 p.m., Straight-Ahead Jazz is scheduled at the New Orleans Stage. Bassist, composer and arranger Amina Scott will present her own compositions and give insights into her remarkable artistic personality as part of the Amina Scott Collective. Joining her on stage are drummer Gerald Watkins, pianist Fredrick Sanders and saxophonist Ricardo Pascal. The band, which is one of many interesting spin-offs of the New Orleans Jazz orchestra, also performs tomorrow.
Among this year’s new features, JazzAscona will offer for the first time the warm sounds of flamenco and Latin American music. On the lakefront it will be “fiesta”: Starting tonight until Wednesday 28 with Nolosé, a group of ten musicians offering a truly spectacular show that produces “muy muy caliente” urban salsa (10:30 p.m., Stage New Orleans).
Also of note at 9:15 p.m. at Stage Biblioteca is the only concert at JazzAscona 2023 by Freddie & The Cannoballs, one of Switzerland’s best blues bands. As part of the lunchtime concerts, however, play it safe with the Wolverines Jazz Band, a historic Bernese trad-jazz band that has been on stage for 60 years.
