The Treme as a school of life and music: Corey Henry and The Treme Funktet
Corey Henry, a trombonist born in 1975, grew up in the Treme neighborhood, the beating heart of Jazz in New Orleans, surrounded by musical legends. His grandfather played at Preservation Hall and his uncle, Benny Jones, is a member and founder of the legendary Treme Brass Band. Immersed in the brass band tradition from an early age, he learned music directly from the community, without going through school bands like so many other musicians in the city. At age 16, his uncle placed him in the Treme Brass Band, allowing him to hone his style alongside great musicians such as Kermit Ruffins.
In 2012 he played with the Rebirth Brass Band on the Grammy-winning album Rebirth of New Orleans. He has received several awards, including Best Emerging Artist (2013) and Best Trombonist (2016) from Offbeat Magazine. In 2019, with his band Treme Funktet, he won the Best of the Big Easy Award and the Spirit of Satchmo Music Award, sponsored by French Quarter Festivals, Inc. for his commitment to preserving and honoring the legacy of Louis Armstrong through his performances. On his debut album Lapeitah, Henry demonstrates his talent as a leader, singer and trombonist who can combine technique and expressive power to thrill audiences.
