Sunday, June 25: Cuban rhythms and the irresistible Frog & Henry

JazzAscona is offering a free afternoon for children today, Sunday, at Elvezia Square (between 3:30 and 6 p.m.). After a workshop in which musical instruments will be made, children’s writer and actress Alessandra Cattori will tell the story “JazzAscona tra le stelle” (JazzAscona among the stars) in which extraterrestrials discover music. After the storytelling children will accompany a youth brass band in a small musical parade.

On the lakefront, to be discovered in prime time (6:30 p.m. at Stage Biblioteca) the talented and very young Manon Mullener with her latin jazz quintet, and not to be missed (8: 00 – Stage New Orleans) is percussionist, composer and bandleader Alexey Marti, who with his Afrogumbo lineup offers a personal approach to the genre of Latin jazz. He musically mixes the musical traditions of Cuba and the bata spiritual percussion of West Africa with influences from trad jazz, the second line, blues, jazz and funk of New Orleans. 

The evening will then continue (9:30 p.m. New Orleans Terrace) with the concert and presentation of the Audience Award “Aet My Choice 2022” to Frog & Henry, last year’s darlings thanks to their delightfully vintage sound, likability and bravura. Trad jazz at its best and most spontaneous expression. 

Finally, let us point out the last concert in Ascona of the Stanford Jazz Orchestra, a big band of students from the American university of the same name, which has as its guest the great trumpeter Wayne Bergeron. 

This and much more is on offer today at JazzAscona. All concerts, let’s remember, are free. Free parking spaces are available on Lido Street starting at 7 p.m.
