Thursday, 29 June: Holiday with gospel sounds and jazz & soul diva China Moses

Today’s rich program already offers a first weighty highlight in the late afternoon with the traditional St. Peter and Paul gospel concert with, this year, Your Gospel Team, an award-winning collective of international artists focusing on traditional African-American gospel music (17:00, Collegio Papio Church).

Among the many concerts taking place in the evening, in addition to Davina & the Vagabonds (22:00, Stage Chiesa) we would like to highlight two truly unique and highly anticipated events.

At 21:15 the internationally renowned saxophonist Nicole Johänntgen will be performing at the Stage Biblioteca. The saxophonist from Zurich will present her new album Henry III, which comes with plenty of groove and funky rhythms and draws inspiration from New Orleans jazz. «Nicole has something very special in her playing: a big, generous heart and an extraordinary energy,» the great American saxophonist David Liebman said about her.

On the main stage (22:30, Stage New Orleans), China Moses, one of the most interesting voices in contemporary jazz, will hold the first of two concerts at JazzAscona. The daughter of vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater and director Gilbert Moses made her breakthrough as a soloist at the beginning of the last decade and now performs regularly on the big stages. Tonight we will be able to admire her in a special formation led by Adonis Rose (the conductor of the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra) created especially for this occasion.

For the night owls: at midnight you can enjoy jazz music from the Dave Sharp Worlds Quartet with special guest Don Hicks at the New Orleans Terrace, or visit the Jam Session at Cambüsa. By the way, all JazzAscona concerts are free of charge. Free parking is available in Via Lido from 19:00.
