Friday 30 June: the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra takes the stage!
The second last day of JazzAscona 2023 features a barrage of concerts, and if you want to get an early start you could head to the Bistrot Otello at 12:30 p.m. to check out the Marco Marcelletti Trio, one of the young ensembles in the Groovin’Up programme, performing at JazzAscona with the 20-year-old Belgian guitar talent Eliott Knuets. Great things are said about him.
On the lakeside, the highlights of the evening are two: at 9:15 p.m., at the Stage Biblioteca, the young American saxophonist, singer, and multi-instrumentalist Vanessa Collier makes her Ascona debut. Winner of several Blues Music Awards, she is one of the most interesting artists of the new generation. She mixes funk, soul, and blues, offering explosive and exciting live performances.
A little later (10:30 p.m., Stage New Orleans), the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra conducted by Adonis Rose will take the stage for the first of two concerts planned for this year in Ascona, with special guest China Moses, a superb and eclectic singer accustomed to performing with large orchestras and with the likes of Nils Landgren, Jamie Cullum, Roy Hargrove, but also Chilly Gonzales, Cerrone or Klaus Doldinger. A concert not to be missed!
Other highlights of the evening include the Gabrielle Cavassa Ensemble (straight-ahead jazz style, 8 p.m., at Stage New Orleans), while lovers of traditional jazz will not miss the excellent French trio The Rag Messengers (9:30 p.m., New Orleans Terrace) or the band The Ragtime Nightmare (10:00 p.m., Piazzale Elvezia).
