Shems Bendali Quintet

The Persian heritage of Shems Bendali, a young trumpet talent

Shems Bendali is a young and French-Swiss jazz trumpeter. Winner of the Cully Jazz Festival prize in 2018 and the following year of the Grand Prix of the Tremplin d’Avignon Jazz Festival. Critically acclaimed for his first CD, Choukheads, he joins the JazzAscona list of performers with his quintet for the first time to introduce his second album Tabriz, in which he embarks on a journey back to the origins of his name: Shems-Eddine. According to family legend, his name was revealed to his father in a dream in which the Persian mystic, poet and philosopher Shams ad Dîn Tabrizi appeared and whose spiritual connection with the great Sufi master Djalal Dîn Rümi is well known. In this recording, the trumpeter explores the vast ramifications of his father’s dream and the depth of the relationship between Shams and Rümi. An exotic and spiritual musical journey not to be missed!
